The Sinking of the USS Wasp: The Most Devastating Torpedo Attack of WW2
(Animated Battle Map)
In this video I explain the sinking of the USS Wasp by an incredibly lucky and destructive torpedo salvo from submarine I-19. I also include the Battle of Edson’s Ridge and show how the two events are connected.
Corrections:
07:08 I say "only an hour left of daylight" I meant to say "only an hour left till daylight".
22:40 I should have said overhead instead of ceiling.

The Americans had one other advantage at Midway, in addition to having broke the Japanese code, their carriers also had radar while the Japanese did not. If the Japanese had had radar, it might have negated some of the American advantage.

Send force to point in north, because is a trap and for sure CVs Americans are there. Signals: Radios in the start, that fleet cant be only oilers or that, position to the wind (airplane). And more revelant, no plane in island can hit him, they are noobs, so 5% chance of hit in another island wave atack to his Cvs.

I would argue the Kernstown was not a loss but a tactical draw. 1. Once Jackson realize the mistake he made which was almost immediately, he adjusted his plan and was able to get a better position that forced the union into an offensive position. 2. He created several feints on the field making the union believe there were more men that there really was. So the union never amassed their forces for a decisive blow. 3. He withdrew from the field on his accord. He realized the union had amassed for a final assault and he understood that his men had expended all of their ammunition. He had two brigades in reserve, but knew they weren’t enough to withstand the final assault. 4. The union took massive casualties compared to Jackson. Jackson casualty count grew only after giving up the high ground on the withdrawal, but still over all the union casualties were way higher than the confederacy.

What's hilarious is the US had NO intention of fighting the Japanese even if they'd gone ahead with all the other attacks. One of the greatest strategic blunders of WWII, right up there with Hitler ordering Heinz Guderian to stop rather than pursue the British into Dunkirk and destroy them before they could escape, and the US deciding to island hop instead of blockading and attacking the mainland directly after Midway.

It's very hard to fault Fletcher for the failure at Wake. Nimitz, in overall command, canceled the mission (for good reasons}. It is a good what-if scenario to think about what might have happened if the two carriers had kept on to Wake. There were Japanese carriers on route, but not there yet. Might have been pretty messy for the Japanese.

In contrast to our capacities during WW2, the sad fact the USA has given up the backbone of our industrial might. We allowed our steel plants and heavy manufacturing to die off. The globalization has shifted much of the world's manufacturing capacity away from America. If we were ever needing to wage a full blown war again, we can't rely on our own supplies and capabilities.

There's ALOT to be said for that action. It provides our allies with requisite heavy industry experience, it places many plants in closer proximity to the ores that they'll refine, and (above all), it makes both nations and people more dependent on one another. This latter point is paramount, because the sober truth is that human beings- regardless of nationality- will sink or swim together.

There is no doubt Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Ernest King was looking for any excuse to sack Admiral Frank Fletcher even before the commencement of the naval engagements north of the Solomon Islands. I read somewhere that King was not happy with Fletcher’s turning over tactical command to Admiral Ray Spruance in the closing hours of the Battle of Midway. Once you were on King’s shit list, you weren’t coming off. Frank Jack Fletcher got a raw deal from the Naval HQ in Washington. On the other hand, Admiral William Halsey, while in commmand after Admiral Gormley was relieved, performed outstandingly in 1942 and into 43, he was very mediocre and went on to commit a number of avoidable mistakes in 1944-45. But unlike Fletcher, they promoted Halsey with a very rare fifth Fleet Admiral star. That’s after getting approximately 800 sailors killed in the avoidable surface action off the Philippines and later driving his fleet into two typhoons in which three ships went down and approximately 1100 sailors drowned. So why the double standard with the two admirals? ( Public Relations!)

After coordinated confrontations At 9:41, at 12:00, at 13:28, Nagumo had to know the ambush plan had failed as planned and that Americans were prepared to fight. Problem is he kept pressing on at great cost of human lives and ultimately resulted in a suicidal attack and his own death in later ambush by American. As a Japanese person, these series were painful to watch 🥲 In today's Japan, Yamamoto is known as a tragic great general who was assassinated, and Nagumo is known as incompetent. However, looking back at Operation MI itself, there were operational flaws such as insufficient reconnaissance and too few aircraft carriers despite the complex mission of attacking Midway base and enemy aircraft carriers at the same time. They should have included the escort aircraft carriers of Operation AL from the beginning! Despite this fatal failure, the results were hidden from the public, and Yamamoto and Nagumo were retained in their posts. The phrase "history is written by the winners" is often used, but I believe that the losers sometimes twist history to suit their own convenience. Sadly, the Japanese people have yet to face this fact.👹
